November 2011 Faculty Advisor Spotlight: Dr. Dawn G. Gregg – The University of Colorado Denver, Information Systems Association
Dr. Dawn G. Gregg is the Interim Director of the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship, and an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Denver. She has been on the AIS Student Chapter Advisory Board for the past year and is currently serving as the Chairman of the AIS Student Chapter Awards subcommittee.
Dawn has served as the faculty advisor for The University of Colorado Denver’s Information Systems Association, a founding AIS Student Chapter, since the Fall of 2003. Since she helped found the organization, Dr. Gregg has also played many key roles in the overall development and success of the organization.
Over the past eight years, she has helped the club plan and execute major events, plant tours, guest speakers and has helped promote professional development. Most recently, Dr. Gregg has helped the ISA organize a speaker panel on IT careers and professional development within the IT field. The October 11th panel of guest speakers included included Randy Guthrie of Microsoft and several CIO’s of different companies. Under her leadership, the ISA has been honored with several awards for their outstanding work, including the 2009-2010 UC Denver Outstanding Student Chapter Award and the 2010 UC Denver Outstanding Educational Program Award. The University of Colorado has also awarded Dr. Gregg the 2011 Dave Laube Community Impact Award and the 2008 Business School Dean’s Scholar Award.
One of her biggest feats as faculty advisor came in the fall of 2006, when a group of ISA club members decided that their activity for the year would be to start a software company. This resulted in “Developing Minds Software”, a company dedicated to serving the needs of families and educational institutions challenged with serving the developmentally disabled. In 2008, the company competed against over 40 other companies, where they won the annual Bard Center Business Plan competition. Developing Minds Software remains in business today. Dr. Gregg and two of her former students are still actively involved with the company!
Dr. Dawn G. Gregg received her Ph.D. in Computer Information Systems and her M.S. in Information Management from Arizona State University, her M.B.A. from Arizona State University West, and her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Irvine. Prior to her doctoral studies, she was employed for nine years as a research and development engineer. Her current research focuses on how to organize and maintain Web-based content so that it can be used to better meet business and special education needs. Her work has been published in numerous journals such as MIS Quarterly, The International Journal of Electronic Commerce, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Communications of the ACM, and Decision Support Systems.
